WE TEACH SELF-ESTEEM, (and how to sail!) We don’t HOPE they’ll get self-esteem just by learning how to sail, we TEACH IT. Self esteem is a skill, like sailing, which can be learned, and in teen culture today, we MUST BE TEACHING! We do just that! We focus on their mindset, not their skillset!

We believe every kid is an “at-risk kid,” until they know how to challenge their unspoken and secret beliefs of “not-enoughness. Self esteem is but a collection of thoughts / beliefs about oneself, which are mostly negative in teens today. We help youth break down those thought patterns and rebuild the way they think about themselves in a more positive way.

Based on pre- and post- surveys, our youth report a 246% increase in pride, self-esteem, and belief in their place in the world. And, 9 out 10 rated their experience as “XXXLOVED IT!” It’s serious, it’s ridiculous – It’s seriously ridiculous, and ridiculously serious! They’ll have so much fun, they won’t even realize they’re changing! Until we ask – and we ask!

We use that pesky “no-wind” time to empower our youth by talking about how applying the metaphors of each sailing lesson can change the negative mental chatter so prevalent today, to help them navigate the stormy seas of youth, and inspire them into their greatest-yet-to-be! For example, to turn a boat left, you steer right! They accept a complete change in how they think about steering in order to not crash! The same is true with thinking about anything – changing it so they don’t crash their lives! We have a 20-point curriculum! We help them focus on what they did right/well vs. what they messed up, need to work on, failed at, etc. We help them re-write their mental script, and help them understand why they wrote the “life-story,” they’ve lived with until now.

Panful BELIEFS seek pain RELIEF. Beliefs such as “I’m not good enough, I don’t belong, I’m a failure, there’s something wrong with me – as well as, I have to perfect; hurt -and badly. And mental/emotional pain, just like physical pain, seeks medication, i.e. like Drugs, Alcohol, self-harm. Isolationism, excessive ‘screen-time, and suicidal Ideations. But when beliefs change, so do behaviors, as there’s nothing left to medicate.

ABLE To Sail received US Sailing’s National award for “Outstanding Innovations In Programming,” recognizing 1 organization every 4 years! We are in our 12 th year and are very good at what we do. Can’t wait to see you this summer!
